24th Star Movie Actor of the Year regrets fellow actor’s snub of original offer

24th Philippine Movie Press Club’s Star Awards’ Best Actor Paolo Contis felt sorry for a fellow actor who was originally offered his role in Comguild Productions’ "Banal."

Was he referring to Dennis Trillo who begged off from the project because it was reportedly an indie film?

In his acceptance speech Friday night at the Ateneo de Manila University's Henry Lee Irwin Theater in Loyola Heights, Contis said he was lucky to have accepted the role - however second fiddle that he was.

He also dedicated his award to his girlfriend. Isabel Oli.

At the foot of the proscenium stage, Contis was so jolly and was proudly making faces.

2008 Star Movie Actress Ai Ai de las Alas was also jovial when she was handed the trophy but cracked jokes just the same when she delivered her acceptance talk.

She thanked all her co-nominees when she said "…sa kapwa ko nomina…" and abruptly suspended her sentence realizing it was ungrammatical. "Sorry na. Nominees. Sasabihin ko sana, nominated," said Ai Ai who was jokingly annoyed by a jeer in one corner of the hall.

Ai Ai was teary-eyed when she acknowledged the goodness of Someone Above There despite the intrigues thrown her way.

She also shared his award with her children.

Meanwhile, the only hitch on the show was Christopher de Leon’s non-appearance in his duet with Kuh Ledesma.

According to PMPC former president Letty G. Celi, Christopher could have notified the production he could not make the awards night but as the rites progressed throughout the evening he did not send any notice.

The PMPC officers and the production staff had panicked when the song number was already readied and de Leon wasn’t in sight.

But knowing Kuh as a professional, she went it alone with the "Duyan" number.

Young actress Angelica Panganiban has slimmed down so dramatically, the movie press couldn’t recognize her at once during the launch of the shoe brand that she's endorsing. Angelica even looks younger now compared to when she was first introduced in TV soap “Familia Zaragoza” back in 1995.

A former child star, Angelica now combines the aura of young girl and a woman's sensual, sexual potency--she looked dainty when she appeared before the media, complete with a huge red ribbon in her hair but that fragility is combined with a steely touighness that you see in her eyes, the set of her jaw.

It's that devastating beauty of a Lolita--in every sense of the Nabokov novel--that makes Angelica such an attention-grabber wherever she goes. No wonder her boyfriend model/actor Derek Ramsay is smitten with her.

Angelica was at the Mario d'Boro launch both as endorser and designer. She doesn't only model the shoes but will also contribute to their creation.

The actress said that she's very excited to present her concepts and designs of ladies shoes to the owner of Mario d’Boro.

“Gusto ko pong makapag-ambag ng talent ko sa design. I will present them to Mr. Peter Banico and get them patented. I hope he’ll like them,” said Angelica, who is now part of the cast of ABS-CBNs newest soap, “Iisa Pa Lamang.”

“Napag-isip-isip ko po kasi na marami pang puwedeng gawin at maisuot na sapatos. Mahilig po kasi ako sa kulay. At sabi ko, makakadagdag ang creations ko sa mga isinusuot kong sapatos sa taping at sa shooting.," she added.

When she's not acting or designing ladies' footwear, she spends time with Derek to, among other things, learn golf.

“Marami pa po akong kailangang matutunan sa golf. Ang sarap pong maglaro ng golf,” she said.

ABS-CBN and GMA-7 gained 13 Nominations in 2007 Asian TV Awards

The two giant networks on Philippine television bags 13 nominations in the Asian TV Awards which will be held on November 29 at the Suntec Convention Hall in Singapore.

GMA-7 has nine (9) nominations while ABS-CBN has four (4).

ABS-CBN's Bandila and TV Patrol World were nominated for Best News Program for the "Subic Rape Case Promulgation" and "Taguig Hostage Drama," respectively competing with GMA-7's 24 Oras' coverage of "Super Typhoon Milenyo".

Other GMA-7 nominations were: Philippine Agenda's "Education" (an election-primer special) and Emergency's "Mga Batang Magsusunog" for Best Social Awareness Program; Kapuso Mo, Jessica Sojo was nominated for Best Infotainment Program, and Reporter's Notebook for Best Current Affairs Program. Reporter's Notebook anchor hosts Maki Pulido and Jiggy Manicad are also nominated for Best Current Affairs Presenter.

For the Best Comedy Performance by an Actor category, Ogie Alcasid and Michael V of Bubble Gang were included as nominees while Gina Pareño was nominated for Best Drama Performance by an Actress in the "Rehas" episode of Maalaala Mo Kaya.

Lastly, Edu Manzano's game show Pilipinas Game KNB? was nominated for Best Game Show or Quiz Program.

In the 12th year of the Asian Television Awards 2007 (ATA 2007), they reduced their categories into 29 categories to ensure better representation of the productions in Asia.

The Pinoy Big Brother Season 2 Third placer Wendy Valdez was surprised when her Teleserye titled Margarita ended last Friday, September 21, which is earlier than expected.

Margarita aired in ABS-CBN for less than two months and according to Wendy's previous interview with the press, Margarita will be aired until November.

The ABS-CBN management informed them about the sudden end of her teleserye for the reason that ABS-CBN have to adjust time for the new shows that will be aired in the Kapamilya channel.

Tony Award Winner Lea Salonga will play the role of "Cinderella" which will definitely be the biggest musical production in the Philippines.

According to producer Marc Routh "Cinderella" will cost about US $ 2 million to produce.

The Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella will be directed by Aliw award winner Bobby Garcia and is produced by Broadway Asia Entertainment, with Marc Routh as Chief Operating Officer and will be shown for several weeks at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), Manila.

Marc Routh said "Cinderella" will also have its Asian tour and may also hire other Filipino talents to join the band.

In celebration of ABS-CBN Star Magic’s fifteenth year, a grand launching of its 2008 catalog was held yesterday, September 23 lead by Mr. Johnny "Mr. M" Manahan and Ms. Rikka Dylim with a two-pronged pictorial exhibits at the 14th Floor of ABS-CBN EJL Building and at TriNoMa Mall, Quezon City.

The Star Magic talents came dressed all in white to grace the event. Every guest was given their copy of the 2008 catalogue.

Human Rights Film: Rated X by MTRCB

The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board gave the "Rights" an X rating because the scenes "are presented unfairly, one-sided, and undermines the faith and confidence of the government and duly constituted authorities, thus, not for public exhibition."

The “Rights” film is a compilation of short films portraying their views on the Philippines' human rights situation. This was produced by the groups Free Jonas Burgos Movement, Desaparecidos, Karapatan and the Southern Luzon Exposure.

The film was to have been shown on the 35th anniversary of the Martial Law declaration of former President Ferdinand Marcos, Friday, September 21.

ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation bags 2 nominations in 2007 Asian TV Awards for Best News Program category, 1 nomination for Best Game or Quiz Program and 1 nomination for Best Drama Performance by an Actress category.

ABS-CBN’s news programs “Bandila” (Subic Rape Case Promulgation) and “TV Patrol World” (Taguig Hostage Drama) competes for the Best News program category, while “Pilipinas Game KNB?” was nominated for Best Game or Quiz Program and Multi-awarded actress Gina Pareno was again recognized for her performance in “Maala-ala Mo Kaya” in the “Jail” (Rehas) episode for Best Drama Performance by an Actress category.

The Asian Television Awards winners will be announced in an awarding ceremony on Nov. 29, 2007 at the Suntec Convention Hall in Singapore.

Britney Spears charged for parking lot crash

Britney Spears, 25-year old Pop Princess, was charged with misdemeanor counts of hit and run and driving without a valid license after being involved in a hit-and-run incident following a minor parking lot scrape.

The charges branched from an incident last August 6 in a private parking lot when paparazzi journalists captured her on film bumping another vehicle before driving off.

Britney Spears is scheduled to face arraignment on October 10 but not required to appear. Spears is also ordered by court commissioner to undergo drug and alcohol testing for her child custody conflict with ex-husband Kevin Federline.

Joey de Leon was upset with the memo he received from GMA-7 officials and Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) regarding his actions and comments. This made the veteran host-comedian to file an indefinite leave of absence in his showbiz talk show, Startalk.

According to Joey, he was unclear of the memo he received and because Startalk is a talkshow, he decided to temporarily leave to avoid making a mistake and save the show and his co-host from being reprimanded.

In the Philippine Entertainment Portal update, it says that GMA-7 buys rights to remake Mexican telenovela "Rosalinda” of the Mexican singer-actress, Thalia.

Rosalinda was the last soap done by Thalia which was shown on ABS-CBN which holds the record for the highest-rating primetime show (69.8 %) in the Philippines according to AGB Nielsen Philippines.

GMA-7 network separately purchased the right of Marimar and Rosalinda.

The remake of Rosalinda will start next year. The Filipino version of Marimar will end next year to be replaced by Joaquin Bordado starring the Philippine Action Superstar Robin Padilla.

The Philippine Models Association of the Philippines (PMAP) celebrated their 20th anniversary last September 5 at The Peninsula Manila filled with nostalgia of fashion's past and present.

Two decades ago, Tina Maristela Ocampo, Ronnie Asuncion, and Robert David joined forces and created an organization aiming to “uplift, protect, and professionalize the modeling industry in the Philippines”.

PMAP was the first and only Asian association of models organized by models.

The celebration with a theme "Twenty Years of PMAP," showcased works by Auggie Cordero, Inno Sotto, Rajo Laurel, Ivarluski Aseron, Avel Bacudio, Vittorio, Mike de la Rosa, and Patrice Ramos-Diaz. The former President Joseph Ejercito Estrada was sentenced guilty while Jinggoy Estrada (Erap's son)and lawyer Eduardo Serapio was acquitted by the Sandiganbayan anti-graft court.

Former president Joseph Estrada has been found guilty beyond reasonable doubt of plunder. The perjury case however was dismissed. Erap was sentenced to a 40 years of imprisonment or Reclusion Perpetua.

The court said it would allow Estrada to stay at his resthouse in Tanay, Rizal “until further orders.”

COMELEC Chairman Benjamin Abalos threatens to sue the son of JDV

The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Chairman Benjamin Abalos Sr. said that he will file charges against Jose de Venecia III for accusing him of attempted bribery.

Jose de Venecia III, also known as Joey, is the son of Jose de Venecia Jr. (JDV) and co-founder of Amsterdam Holdings Inc. (AHI). According to him, Abalos tried to bribe him with $10 million to withdraw his company’s bid to bag the national broadband network (NBN) supply contract with the Department of Transportation and Communications where he immediately declined the money.

Meanwhile, the embattled Chairman Abalos stressed that he never offered any money to anybody to support the project and he is not even part of the broadband deal. He also said that he do not have $10 million to bribe the younger de Venecia.

The COMELEC chairman was indicted of brokering the deal on behalf of China’s ZTE Corp. He purportedly received generous gifts from ZTE officials, including women. Abalos, however, denied the allegations.

Luciano Pavarotti Dies at the Age of 71

Italian opera star Luciano Pavarotti,the known King of High Cs dies at the age of 71 at 5 a.m.

In July 2006, the Italian tenor was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and was required of emergency surgery to remove the tumor which he was reported "recovering well after the surgery.

On August 9, 2007, Pavarotti was hospitalized in his hometown of Modena, in Northern Italy, for observation. According to reports he was hospitalized due to pneumonia.

He planned to return to recording his "sacred songs" and teaching his young pupils, according to reports but on August 21, it was announced that he was being treated in the cancer ward, given tests related to his pancreatic cancer, and would not be released for another few days.

Early morning of September 6, Thursday, Luciano Pavarotti died at the age of 71 with his wife and four daughters around him.

In an email statement, his manager wrote, "The Maestro fought a long, tough battle against the pancreatic cancer which eventually took his life. In fitting with the approach that characterized his life and work, he remained positive until finally succumbing to the last stages of his illness."

Congressman Abante wants Chairman Laguardia to Step Down from her Office

"I am calling on the chairperson of the MTRCB to resign because she is not doing her job."

This was Congressman Bienvenido Abante’s call for Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) Chairwoman Consoliza Laguardia last September 4, 2007 regarding the Wilyonaryo controversy.

According to Manila 6th District Congressman Abante, Chairman Laguardia failed to give sufficient initiative to investigate the incident that happened on Wowowee on its Wilyonaryo segment last August 20.

On the other hand, Laguardia replied to Abante and said, “I serve in the pleasure of the president. Siya ang nag-appoint sa akin at siya rin ang puwedeng magsabi kung kailangan ko nang umalis, Ire-request ko rin siya na medyo umatras at makipag-usap din sa DTI [Department of Trade and Industry] para sabay-sabay naming maguwardiyahan itong telebisyon”

According to Laguardia, it is not their concern when it comes to mechanics of the game show, they are a classification board, what they do is to classify if a show is for General Patronage or for Parental Guidance.

When it comes to initiative, she made a move to mediate on the feud between Willie Revillame of Wowowee and Joey de Leon of Eat Bulaga.

The Department of Trade and Industry undersecretary Zeny Maglaya confirmed that they are the one responsible on regulating the game shows aired on television and now they already created a task force to investigate the Wilyonaryo controversy.

In the middle of disagreement with Sen. Loren Legarda, the Philippine-based Internet porn site boybastos.com has temporarily stopped its operation.

Senator Loren Legarda urged the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (Iacat) and National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) last Wednesday to shut down the site alleging boybastos.com to entice possible customers that can be directed to linked paid services and that the site administrators have evidently also been investing large sums, entering paid porn sites abroad, downloading for a fee some of the materials, and then posting them on boybastos.com for all to see.

Also, the porn site encourages visitors to freely contribute their own videos, including so-called sex scandal video, Legarda said.

Boybastos.com posted a message in their site insisting that they would never promote escort services or human trafficking.

According to the site, they will temporarily close their site due to increase in traffic that might cancel their account by their Internet provider. They insist that it has nothing to do with Senator Legarda’s criticisms hurled to them.

For two days, Willie Revillame, main host of the famous and controversial noon time game show, Wowowee took a leave of absence and was replaced by comedienne Pokwang and Actor John Lloyd Cruz.

Today, Mariel Rodriguez, one of Willie's co-host, announced that in the later part of the show Willie Revillame will be giving a very important statement.

Before the game, Wilyonaryo started, Willie Revillame appeared to the audience to explain and clear his name, Wowowee and ABS-CBN regarding the alleged rigging of Wilyonaryo.

He explained very well how the incident happen and why there is two different number in one wheel.

After he explained everything, he end his statement with an apology to Joey de Leon of Eat Bulaga from their rival network.

Willie Revillame promised to be back on his show tomorrow.

Philippine Idol Season 2: From ABC 5 to GMA 7

Philippine Idol, a franchise of the Idol series, which is a singing search to find the best young singer in the country, is under negotiation between Fremantle Media and GMA 7.

The Philippine Idol Season 2 might be shown on Kapuso Network but still under negotiation.

According to PEP’s source, if ABC 5, owned by Tonyboy Cojuangco won’t be able to meet with the agreement set by Fremantle Media, Philippine Idol Season 2 would possibly be aired on GMA 7.

If Philippine Idol will be transferred to GMA 7 network, will Ryan Agoncillo still host the said search? And will they be able to retain Mr. Ryan Cayabyab as the chairman of the board of judges?

Philippine Idol director Mark Reyes’ position might also be affected if a sudden change of network happens, Louie Ignacio who directs the musical variety programs of GMA-7 might replace him.

And if Philippine Idol will transfer to the Kapuso Network, there’ll be no Pinoy Pop Superstar which is also a popular singing search on GMA 7 and Regine Velasquez might as well host the said season of Philippine Idol.

On Friday, fans of Princess Diana reunites as they commemorate the 10th Death Anniversary of their beloved Diana.

Hundreds of people queue in front of the palace where Diana lived for 15 years.

An informal religious service was held as part of their annual ritual in front of Kesington Palace.

"This is a service for the people, this is not a media razzmatazz. It is for the people who immensely cared for the princess," Gelli said at the start of the 15-minute tribute which ended with the playing of Candle in the Wind, which was sung by Elton John at Diana's funeral.

MTRCB Appeals to End Word War Between Willie Revillame and Joey De Leon

MTRCB chairwoman Consoliza Laguardia set off a meeting between rival noontime show hosts Joey de Leon (Eat Bulaga) and Willie Revillame (Wowowee) to end their public bickering over the issue of the alleged rigged game portion and personal attacks.

This planned meeting did not push through on Friday. Revillame together with director Edgar Mortiz arrived in Laguardia’s office but Joey on the other hand did not make it due to previous commitment for a television taping.

According to Laguardia, she initiated the mediation between the two hosts. She believes that they have a big responsibility to their audience.

Meanwhile, ABS-CBN welcomes any investigation regarding the controversy. They vowed full cooperation and is willing to participate to settle the issue.

With the steaming issue between Joey de Leon and Willie Revillame, each can't hold of themselves to exchange sharp words with each other.

Before Joey aired his response on Eat Bulaga to Willie Revillame's outburst on his noon time game show Wowowee, He was able to have a phone-patch interview with Ali Sotto and Arnold Clavio on Double A sa Double B on DZBB.

"Natawa lang ako.. Ganoon pala ‘yon. Wala siyang alam. Mababaw. Hindi niya kayang magpaliwanag. Hindi niya kaya na mag-sorry."

Manny Pacquiao Training now Closed to the Public

The ABS-CBN head for TV Production, Cory Vidanes released a statement regarding the "Wilyonaryo" controversy that put the noon time game show Wowowee and its host Willie Revillame to blame.

In TV Patrol World interview with Vidanes, she admitted a design flaw in Wowowee's new game segment and clears that no cheating occurred in the August 20 episode.

Everybody is eager to get Joey de Leon's side regarding Willie's outburst of feelings yesterday in his noontime show Wowowee.

Willie shed tears as he defend himself to what Joey said on the other network.

Joey de Leon is a regular columnist of Manila Bulletin and in his column "De Leon's Den" he again give lines which would bring out another controversy and will be another talk of the town.

Here is a copy of Joey's column entitled "Transfer-Mers":

"A little more than a week ago, I read somewhere in this paper that someone in the Kapamilya network remarked that, "Ang kapamilya hindi napapalitan, pero ang puso pwedeng i-transplant,"—obviously referring to the well-publicized and quite controversial transfer of a former known kapuso to their side.

"Well, maybe I thought, they even got an ovation for that statement from their audience and followers. And maybe too, the person who thought of it found the idea cute and brilliant. Hmmm... but you know, throughout history, there have been lines spoken, and even by the greatest of men, which when carefully examined closely, are silly and untrue.

"Take for instance—'You can't have your cake and eat it, too.' And, 'the best things in life are free.' Not quite true, right? Yung first one pwede siguro if you're a big star in television and you have a lot of what you call in the business—exchange deals.

"Or you're a young goddess of a woman and you have a filthy rich provider who is like a faucet—hot and cold. But all these have a "kapalit," kaya nga exchange deal, eh. In the first one, the big star will have to plug always. And in the second one, the sexy goddess will always be plugged.

"Transferring networks, or even working for some of these TV stations at the same time ("grossing the net"or "inter-networking") is not new to me. Remember, I belong to the only daily show in Philippine TV history, or maybe the world, which have aired in three different major networks; surviving and outlasting five presidents... and still counting! Yes, we are the KONTOT (Kings Of Network Transfers On Television)! We are the Transfermers!

"That is why this issue about this angel from heaven, I mean seven, who transferred to you know where, is the least of anxieties. I really just find their statement so untrue and unfair, and I feel I need to react (and besides, wala akong article for this week). O, eto na—tatagalugin ko na para mas may dating at may diin. At saka tutal Tagalog din naman yung binitiwang mga salita eh. Ready?

"Maganda lang siguro pakinggan ‘yung mga sinabi n'yo, pero ikinalulungkot ko, mali eh. Para bang isang babaeng nagparetoke—mukha lang maganda, pero hindi totoo.

Supreme Court Grants Custody of Son to Plinky Recto

TV host, actress Plinky Recto was granted by the Supreme court of custody to her 3 year-old son after a long running custody battle with lawyer Magdalo Peña, her former live-in partner.

Both filed suits and counter suits against each other accusing of physical abuse for several years.

The Court of Appeals grants custody of the child in the case brought by Peña on September 2006 and January 2007, and then he brought the case to Supreme Court which end up favoring Recto.

The shooting of Green Paradise was put on hold when problems occur which concerns the film director who according to its co-workers weren't efficient and competitive enough in her work.

Director Bing will be replaced by a Hong Kong director which will arrive this week. The producers also plan to re-shoot the whole film.

Gensan City Hall Scandal

A so-called Gensan City Hall Scandal spreads through mobile phones which is said to be showing two City Hall employees doing the act.

The City Mayor's Office chief of staff, Ernesto Quisay said that their evaluation showed that the scandal was a cut from a video clip that that is purportedly happened at a beach resort in the Boracay Island in Aklan.

The new sex video involving two city hall employees were not among the City Government employees which didn’t match any features on the photo gallery of City Hall workers.

This said to be scandal might be one of those sex videos which were spread in the Internet, edited and make it appear to happen inside the City Hall.

Quisay urged the people and the media to put an end to the matter to stop it from further damaging the city's name and the reputation of the City Hall employees.

Ramon Zamora dies at 72

Veteran actor Ramon Zamora died at the age of 72 due to heart attack.

Ramon Zamora was known as Bruce Lee of the Philippines and his German roles in movie and TV shows.Zamora made his mark with a string of action flicks in the 60s.

According to his daughter Gigi, he died at Marikina Valley Hospital while receiving treatment. His remains were brought to Marian Chapel in Marcos Highway, Antipolo City.

Mau Marcelo Shines on her Debut Album

The first Philippine Idol launched her debut album entitled I Shine For You, under Sony-BMG Music Entertainment.

Maureen Marcelo is from Lucena City. She had competed numerous singing contests which includes Star For a Night where Sarah Geronimo won as the grand champion.

Mau didn’t give up on her dream and pursue her love for singing. Then, her time come to shine as the first Philippine Idol.

Her album I Shine For You is composed of 11 tracks specially chosen by the Sony BMG for her. This includes songs composed by Vehnee Saturno, “Sino Ba Naman Ako” and “Labis Labis” plus "Try Love", "Keep On Tryin" and "Hangga't Kaya Ko Pa." She also interpreted “Minsan Lang Kitang Iibigin”, an Ariel Rivera classic and “Love Takes Time” by Mariah Carey. Her album also include a remix version of I Shine For You and her winning piece in Philippine Idol, “On My Own.”

The title track "I Shine For You " best illustrate Mau's great effort as well as her way of saying thank you to all the people who believed and supported her throughout her battle.

Mau Marcelo will represent the country in the Asian Idol as the winner of Philippine Idol this November in Indonesia.

Banaue Rice Terraces now Endangered

The often called “Eighth Wonder of the World” is in the endangered list and the Philippines is racing to beat the deadline on 2009 given by the United Nation Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s World Heritage Center.

This is to speed up the rescue of Banaue Rice Terraces in Ifugao province which is now dying out.

UNESCO included the Banaue Rice Terraces in 1995 as one of about 180 other World Heritage Sites that should be preserved for future generation’s enjoyment and appreciation.

In 1999, the Rice Terraces of Ifugao was included in the list of World Heritage Sites in Danger due to deterioration of the terrace clusters which was mainly caused by socio-economic problems.

The lack of maintenance due to apparent disinterest of Ifugao youth using the traditional rice farming practiced by elders and ancestors caused damage to terrace walls and irrigation systems. Also, the lack of zoning and failure to prevent the construction of houses ruins the heritage landscape.

DOJ exempts Revillame from Ultra tragedy case

Willie Revillame, noontime game show host of Wowowee was exempted by the Department of Justice regarding the Ultra Stampede that happened a year and a half ago.

February 4, 2004, when thousands of Wowowee supporters and wannabe millionaires rush in to Philsports Arena in Pasig City as Wowowee celebrates its first year anniversary. Unfortunately, the supposed to be happy celebration was turned into a shocking stampede which killed 71 people.

In a seven-page resolution, Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez approved the petition for review filed by Revillame which sought a reversal of the finding of probable cause for reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide and physical injuries by Senior State Prosecutor Leo Dacera III against him.

Manage Your Stress, Don't Let Stress Control You.

Toxic days? Stressed out? Give yourself a break. Try these proven strategies for controlling stress (instead of letting stress control you).

Take charge
"When I ask general audiences if they can control their stress level to make it work for them, no more than half say they can," says Esther M. Sternberg, M.D. "If I ask audiences of pilots or neurosurgeons the same question, they all say they can."

The difference is the amount of control these people believe they have over the situation. Pilots, neurosurgeons, firefighters, and others with high-pressure occupations are trained to use the stress response as a way to monitor their own behavior. When a pilot flies a plane through a storm, his heart races, his breath becomes shallow, and his attention is intensely focused on the job at hand. He experiences the physiological arousal that defines stress, but he doesn't label the situation as stressful. He's done this before. He knows what to expect. He's in control.

On the other hand, if you're a passenger in the airplane cabin, you're uncomfortable because the plane is bouncing around and you can't do anything about it. You feel stressed. "The trick in these kinds of situations is to make yourself feel, little by little, as though you're in control, to make an unknowable situation seem knowable," Sternberg says. Watch the flight attendant. He has the experience to recognize how much danger the plane is in. If he looks calm (and he probably does), you'll feel calmer.

If your work schedule sets your teeth to grinding, make a list of projects you need to get done and front-load it with tasks you can accomplish quickly. As you check off accomplishments, you'll begin to feel in control, and your stress will ease.

Try scheduling daily chores so that you can attack the most difficult ones when your energy level is highest. And delegate. Not just to coworkers but also to your children, your spouse, and your friends.

Give yourself time-outs
Of course, you can't control everything. Your child's schedule will inevitably conflict with your work deadlines. Bad weather will flood the picnic.

"We know that chronic stress has a physical impact on your body," Esther M. Sternberg, M.D., says, but if you interrupt stressful moments with calm ones, "you can lessen that impact." And it's easier than you think to get positive results.

If you have a series of crushing deadlines looming at work, take some R&R in between them. A weekend at the beach can restore your equilibrium. Distract yourself with something you find soothing: Cook, knit, or break out the watercolors.

And if you can't take off for the afternoon when you feel your stress rising at the office, just get out for a walk. Even a short stroll can make a difference.

Reach out, don't retreat
For women, fight or flight should probably be called "tend or befriend," because their response to stress is less about fighting or fleeing and more about turning to family and friends, according to Shelley E. Taylor, a professor of psychology at UCLA, and her colleagues.

Women have more intimate social networks than men do, and when they're stressed, they turn to these networks for support. They're more likely to seek out the company of other women and less likely to flee or to fight. A stress response moderated by a system such as tend or befriend, as Taylor reported in the July 2000 Psychological Review, might help explain why women live five years longer, on average, than men.

So indulge in the pleasure of family and friends. Invite old pals to a women's night out. Call your sister. Recent studies show that Americans are feeling more isolated; try to fight that situation. It may help you live longer.

Eat moderately and keep moving
The same hormones that boost your body's supply of available energy in fending off an impending threat also tell your brain that you need to replenish that energy once it's used up. The result: Your cortisol-crazed psyche sends you on the prowl for all-too-fattening pizza, potato chips, and ice cream in an effort to refuel quickly. If you're going through a stressful period, fight the urge to snack endlessly. Preferably, eat small low-carb, low-fat meals.

And try to exercise regularly. Working out counteracts the unhealthy buildup of body fat and dissipates the nervous energy that often drives you to that carton of ice cream. The exercise doesn't have to be strenuous. Walking releases endorphins that can soothe a jangled mind. And even half an hour a day can ease insomnia, which is both a symptom of stress and a stressor.

Practice mindful relaxation
Physiologically, relaxation is the opposite of stress. When you're relaxed, your breathing and heart rate slow and your mind clears. Mindfulness is a way to achieve this level of relaxation using a variety of techniques, including yoga, meditation, and simple relaxation exercises. Mindfulness quiets your chattering mind by teaching you how to observe your thoughts and feelings without seeing them as positive or negative. It trains you to use your breathing and an awareness of your body to focus on the here and now.

The basic relaxation response was first described in 1975 by Harvard Medical School researcher Herbert Benson. His approach has two steps: First, close your eyes and focus on your breath (that's the foundation). Second, choose a phrase, a word, or a prayer and repeat it to stay in the moment and be mindful.

"I use two phrases," says Bernadette Johnson, director of integrative medicine at Greenwich Hospital, in Connecticut. "'I'm breathing in relaxation and peace' when I inhale. 'I'm breathing out tension and anxiety' on the exhale."

Ideally, you'd begin and end your day with 10 to 20 minutes of regular relaxation exercise. But should you find your tension rising during the day, "take a deep breath, hold it for a count of four, and exhale for a count of four," Johnson says. "That's what we call a mini, and if it's built on a foundation of regular, longer relaxation exercises, you can tap into it whenever you need it."

If a thought or an emotion intrudes on your mindfulness and threatens to take you out of the moment, observe it but don't react to it. Think of it as a leaf floating by on a slow-moving stream.

Inhale. Let it glide on by.
I'm so afraid I'm not going to finish that report in time.
Exhale. Ah, another leaf in the swirling current.
I'm so stressed-out.
Inhale. Not anymore.

Angel Locsin who just recently signed a contract with ABS-CBN as an official Kapamilya, also signed a contract with Star Cinema which disappoints the Regal Films’ producer.

According to Mother Lily, Angel’s exclusive contract with Regal Films has not yet ended and that Angel should not sign new contract with another film company.

On the other hand, Angel’s camp contradicted Mother Lily’s statement. According to them, Angel has done movies more than what she is expected to do and is free to sign any contract with other company.

Paris Hilton settles $10M defamation lawsuit

Another case closed for the apple of the eye of worldwide media, Paris Hilton.

Hilton has settled a $10 million lawsuit filed by actress Zeta Graff in 2005. She accused Hilton as the source of a story which was published on gossip pages of the New York Post stating that she had attacked her in a London nightclub.

It says in the article that Graff was alleged of attacking Hilton in a jealous fume while the heiress was dancing with Paris Latsis, Graff’s ex boyfriend who also had a relationship with Hilton.

The New York Post story said Graff had tried to grab a diamond necklace from Hilton's neck before being bundle out of the nightclub.

At the end, the case was settled but no report on how much Hilton paid to settle the case.

World's Tallest Horse?

Niota, Tennessee -- This place could soon have the honor of having the record of having the world’s tallest horse, Tina.

As of to date, Radar a Belgian from Texas, which stands six feet, seven and a half inches (6’7 ½”)tall holds Guinness World Record for the Tallest Living Horse.

Tina, an English Shire stands six feet, four inches tall (6’4”). 2 ½ inches shorter than Radar but she is only 3 years old and still growing, while Radar is already eight years old.

July 28 was the scheduled time by representatives of the Guinness World Records to measure Tina. Record is still pending.

BERLIN – Tom Cruise was shooting his latest film, Valkyrie in central Berlin when an accident happened injuring 11 people.

Cruise plays Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, a German war hero at the center of a failed plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler in July 1944.

The 11 injured extras were riding a German army truck when the side panel burst open when rounding a corner. One was seriously hurt and had to remain in hospital. Filming was halted after the accident

According to police, there were no famous people involved in the accident. They are not sure whether this accident will affect the shooting of this film.

Gretchen Malalad hit by Bong Alvarez

Former basketball player Bong "Mr. Excitement" Alvarez was brought to the police station when he was reported by barangay officials roughing up Cabanlit,a taxi driver.

According to reports, Alvarez who is intoxicated that time blame the taxi driver of overcharging him by taking a longer route.

At Mandaluyong police station where Bong was brought, former PBB housemate Gretchen Malalad who is also a former Binibining Pilipinas 2002 contestant and a karate gold medallist had her coverage in the same area.

Thinking that Malalad was taking a video of his arrest, Bong pulled her hair, elbowed her in the face and neck and punched her on the forehead who then defend herself by giving several blow on Alvarez. Malalad also suffered some scratches on her neck.

According to Malalad, Alvarez was now detained in the police station she will file a case against Alvarez for physical injury.

Hundreds pose nude on Swiss glacier

Eager to raise awareness on the effects of global warming, hundreds of naked people pose for a photo session for Greenpeace on the the Aletsch glacier with US photographer Spencer Tunick.

With a soaring 50 degrees temperature, A “living sculpture” was formed by naked people at Switzerland’s Aletsch glacier Saturday to draw attention about climate change which results to shrinking of glaciers.

New York artist, Tunick was known for his pictures of nude gatherings in public settings worldwide co-organized with the environmental group, Greenpeace.

Angel Locsin Meets Piolo Pascual on ABS-CBN

After the big hit “Bituing Walang Ningning", ABS-CBN will again move and touch your heart with another soap which stars Sarah Geronimo on “Pangarap na Bituin”. This will start airing this 3rd day of September.

Sarah, as Emerald was orphaned at an early age when Mayon Volcano erupts and killed her parents. She together with her sister Ruby (Maja Salvador) lived in an orphanage. They were separated from Sapphire, Emerald and Ruby’s elder sister which is portrayed by Rica Peralejo. Emerald became close with her fellow orphan, Terrence (Jericho Rosales).

Veterans, Joel Torre, Cherry Pie Picache, Sandy Andolong, John Arcilla, and Rio Locsin were included in the cast.

Pangarap na Bituin was the theme of Sharon Cuneta’s movie “Bukas Luluhod ang mga Tala.”

Hazel Ann Mendoza now a Kapuso

After being a Kapamilya for years, the former Star Magic talent Hazel Ann Mendoza jumps to GMA-7 and will play an antagonist role in Kung Mahawi Man ang Ulap with Dennis Trillo and Nadine Samonte.

According to Hazel, there were no big offers given to her by Star Magic after the teleserye “Gulong ng Palad”, she only had TV guestings with Wowowee and ASAP which is not enough to augment her family needs, being the breadwinner after her father died.

After her contract expired with Star Magic, and met Manny Valera, she made a decision of moving to another network [GMA 7].

Now that she's finally a Kapuso, she ventures out into mature roles like the role of Chona, a love interest of Anastacio, played by Tyron Perez. They were called the “most hated couple on TV” for they will terrify the afternoon of their viewers with their bad behavior.
